He may have been Married At First Sight - but Australian reality TV star Ridge Barredo’s third date with the Commonwealth Games has ended in calamity as he hobbled away on crutches.

Barredo, who became a celebrity when he got hitched on the hit Australian TV show three years ago, was cheered on at Glasgow’s Armadillo Arena by his partner Jade Pywell and stepdaughter Victoria as he sought to win a medal after finishing eighth and fifth at the previous two Games.

But the 30-year-old, competing in the 110kg light-heavyweight class, collapsed, writhing in pain after failing with his third and final clean-and-jerk attempt at 190kg.

Australia are business as usual after Matt Richardson’s stunning withdrawal and have qualified fastest in the men’s team sprint at Commonwealth Games track cycling.

Richardson was due to fly into Glasgow from Japan on Thursday’s opening day of the Games track cycling program.

But the England team dropped a bombshell on Wednesday, announcing he was out of the Games because of his crash earlier this week while racing in the Japan keirin series.

Jess Hull has put in a professional performance to cruise through her women’s mile heat ahead of starring in the 5000m final later tonight.

The Australian track star was helped by the slow pace set over the opening laps, but never looked stressed, even as the pace increased.

She effectively jogged over the line in second as she qualified for the next stage comfortably.

Their 47.618 was fourth fastest of the five sides, knocking New Zealand out of contention.

Australia have been handed a tall order to qualify in the team sprint, after the Welsh women just set a new games record with 46.972.

Australia has the chance to take out all three medals in the women’s one mile run after Claudia Hollingsworth’s heat win.

“I felt really good out there, just wanted to stay as controlled as possible out there,” she told Channel 7.

“Just really wanted to practice winding out and see how it felt.

“The whole (Australia) team is so great . . . it was so awesome seeing (Hull and Caldwell) out there, it gave me a confidence and a boost.

“When you put on the Aussie kit it gives you a boost.”
