He may have been Married At First Sight - but Australian reality TV star Ridge Barredo’s third date with the Commonwealth Games has ended in calamity as he hobbled away on crutches.

Barredo, who became a celebrity when he got hitched on the hit Australian TV show three years ago, was cheered on at Glasgow’s Armadillo Arena by his partner Jade Pywell and stepdaughter Victoria as he sought to win a medal after finishing eighth and fifth at the previous two Games.

But the 30-year-old, competing in the 110kg light-heavyweight class, collapsed, writhing in pain after failing with his third and final clean-and-jerk attempt at 190kg.

“I heard a pop on the third attempt. I tried to give it my all,” Barredo said, reflecting on how his right leg gave way and he tumbled heavily on to his back.

A screen was hastily placed in front of him because it looked a nasty one.

But after an initial medical examination, the Sydneysider provided a positive update.

“The initial pain was an eight or nine out of 10. I’ll get some scans but, hopefully, it’s not too serious,” he said, addressing reporters while on crutches.

“It’s a first for me, which was a bit scary.”

Having earlier lifted 155kg in the snatch, Barredo would have finished fourth behind eventual champion, Fiji’s Taniela Rainibogi, if he had made that lift, but the failure meant he failed to record a finish.

Barredo is adamant that his sporting career isn’t over.

“The future is ‘rehab the injury, see how it goes, get the body back ready, and then just listen to the coach and then keep going’. Because I’m not done yet. No way. Not a chance,” he said.

Which is more than can be said for his TV career.

“Definitely done,” he said.

“I’ve found my partner. I’m off the RDTV (reality TV). I wouldn’t recommend it for those who are interested. I mean, if you want to have some fun or in a toxic environment, go for it. But personally, I wouldn’t be going back.

“Jade and I are still together after meeting on the show. Probably one of, like, eight couples all time to be still together.

“So very grateful, very lucky. Jade’s a big part of the reason why I’m here, and I’m very grateful that she’s been so supportive for me.”

The Queenslander had been convinced he had nailed the fourth-place finish when he celebrated completing what he thought was a clean second clean-and-jerk attempt at 190kg, tottering around the stage before finally appearing to lock the lift, marking it with a ‘Jai Arrow’ celebration.

“I think the jury was very tough today,” he sighed.

“I saw a couple of lifts that could have gone either way. I’ve seen a lot worse go past juries. They were on a mission today. I’m obviously disappointed.”

Rainibogi was thrilled to secure Fiji’s first gold medal at the Glasgow Games.

“I’m so proud. I feel emotional about this win. This is my first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games,” he said.

“Weightlifting is a minor sport in Fiji, and we have a lot of young athletes coming through.”
