Nearly 5500 people poured their hearts and souls into a short story for the Best Australian Yarn 2023.

New sponsor Navitas increased the prize pool this year to $75,000 — the richest in the world for short stories — on Friday the winners from around the country were unveiled, including the main prize winner who walked away with $50,000.

Immediately following the awards presentation, subscribers of The West Australian will have the opportunity to read the Top 50 stories and cast their votes for the story they believe deserves the Readers’ Choice prize.

The voting period extends until December 11 and the author of the winning story in the Readers’ Choice category will receive a $2000 prize.
