City of Kwinana helping residents be more environmentally conscious with Living Green series

The City of Kwinana is trying to help residents live a little greener with a series of workshops, activities, and subsidies. The Living Green series runs until June and gives people the chance to learn new ways of living more environmentally friendly and sustainably. Mayor Peter Feasey said the city had this year partnered with Murdoch University to give a special focus on providing food and water for endangered Carnaby’s cockatoos. “The City of Kwinana is collaborating with the Keep Carnaby’s Flying: Ngoolarks Forever project to develop a Community Action Plan that will help our much-loved Ngoolarks, or Carnaby’s cockatoos, to survive and thrive in the region,” he said. “Funded by Lotterywest, the project is embedded with science and aims to get the community involved in various stages. “The city will be provided with mature trees to plant in strategic locations to provide more food trees for the iconic bit threated Carnaby’s cockatoos. It will also strategically place water sources, similar to the bird waterer installed by the City on Council Green in 2021, close to known roost sites to prevent heat stress.” Community planting days will be held to sow more than 2500 native seedlings that will eventually provide food for cockatoos. Residents can also apply for a seedling subsidy to fill their garden with native plants at a reduced rate. More information and details of events can be found on the city’s website.
