We tell stories of the world in words and pictures.

And regular readers will know that we tell them through music and performance, too.

This is largely through our Round the World Dinners, which I perform with composer and musician Steve Richter.

There will be another in September.

But Steve’s been two-timing us, playing with The Awakenings Ensemble.

They have just successfully performed their show Tales of the Orient in six cities across Asia.

And they will perform it on Sunday June 14 at Freo Social in Fremantle.

A spokesperson for the band says: “Tales from the Orient takes audiences on a sonic journey from the coffee houses of Istanbul, through the mountain villages of Lebanon, to the poetry traditions of Persia and beyond.”

It is played by skilled musicians from Australia, Lebanon and Iran on traditional instruments — oud, ney and daff — within a contemporary jazz ensemble. There are two 50-minute sets.

An intoxicating part of the world literally on our doorstep for one night only.

On their Asia tour, there was a full house in the Blue Note Beijing. In JZ Club Shanghai, the full house gave a standing ovation and the audience demand an encore. They sold-out in Hong Kong and Singapore and performed in Taipei, Taiwan.

For the Fremantle show, general seated tickets (with unassigned seating) are $54.29. Concessions are $39.10. moshtix.com.au
