Officials are hoping to attract the biggest WAFL grand final for two decades when East Fremantle meet Peel Thunder at Optus Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

As of Saturday morning, more than 23,000 tickets had been sold to what will be the fourth decider to be held at the stadium and the first since 2021.

The West Australian Football Commission is hoping to hit the 30,000 mark - which will be the biggest crowd since East Perth won a hat-trick of premiership, defeating arch-rivals West Perth in front of 31,382 at Subiaco Oval in 2003.

A total of 29,879 watched as Subiaco beat South Fremantle by 41 points in the last grand final to be held at Optus Stadium in 2021, the third-biggest crowd since the turn of the century.

There is hope that the public holiday on Monday will help encourage thousands of more walk-up fans as the Sharks look to break a 25-year premiership drought.

WAFC chief executive Michael Roberts said he was confident they could hit the 30,000 milestone.

“Traditionally we get about 5000 walk-ups on the day but hopefully we can get one last nudge and get it to the 30,000 mark - similar to what we did last time at Optus Stadium,” Roberts said.

“It’s going to be a nice day, there are six different clubs across the three games and there are plenty of good stories.

“There are plenty of activations, with the junior champions parade. Gates will open at 9am so it will be a full day of WAFL football.

“We’re hoping the East Fremantle fans will come out in force as it’s been a long time between premierships for them.”

Peel Thunder, who are aligned with Fremantle, are looking to win just their third premiership in their short history and their first since 2017.

The festivities will start at 9.20am when Swan Districts and West Perth tackle in the reserves grand final, which can be watched live at Streamer.com.au.

Perth will then battle Claremont in the colts decider, which will be simultaneously broadcast on Channel 7 and Streamer from 12.10pm.

Then it will be the main event, with East Fremantle and Peel Thunder going head-to-head from 3.20pm.
