Imagine you’re a teen basketballer who has just pocketed $5000 in a highlights competition, what would you do with it?

If you’re this year’s BHP Streamer Screamer winner Jacob Ng you take that cash and buy all your teammates new basketball shoes.

Didn’t expect that, did you?

Jacob was a runaway winner out of the 12 finalists in the community sport highlights competition, collecting 24 per cent of the public votes to claim the $5000 major prize.

His entry, submitted by mum Kate Rebeiro, was of a buzzer-beating three from half-court playing for the East Perth Eagles under-16 basketball side.

Jacob’s first instinct when he found out he was in the running for the major prize was to use it to reward his teammates, and that instinct never wavered.

“I wouldn’t have been able to get it if I wasn’t in the team and without all the votes they got me,” he said.

As a result of his BHP Streamer Screamer victory, he also won an additional $1000 for his club.

When Jacob and the family found out he would be one of the 12 finalists they rallied friends, family and teammates to get voting.

While they knew it would be a tough competition to win, they allowed Jacob to sneak his phone onto school camp this past week — just in case some good news came through.

The message, as you can guess, was very well received.

“He’s only a development player so he only got the opportunity to go on in the last few minutes, so it was pretty cool to get that and for someone to capture it on video,” Ms Rebeiro said.

“There were some really good ones there but we hoped it would be (a chance to win). I’ve watched the shot over and over again and it’s pretty amazing.”

Jacob joins rising hockey star Brodee Foster on the list of winter Screamer winners.

This year’s edition of the BHP Streamer Screamer was the biggest yet, with more than twice the number of entries of last year’s competition.

Each week throughout August, three winners were announced on 7NEWS Perth by Screamer ambassador and West Coast Eagles legend Josh Kennedy.

This year the public was able to vote for the major prize winner out of the 12 weekly finalists. Almost 3000 votes were cast, with Jacob’s emerging well on top.

Balcatta Etna’s Georgia Cawley and kiteboarder Ruben Swart also had strong support.
