There were beers in the air, scarves above heads and a deafening chorus of “FRE-OO” ringing through the Federal Hotel on Friday night as Fremantle supporters watched their side storm into the Grand Final.

The wet and windy conditions did little to deter the masses, with thousands of Dockers fans packed shoulder-to-shoulder across the courtyard, many arriving hours before the first siren.

Purple banners hung in the background as supporters settled in for a night that would swing wildly between nervous anticipation and celebration.

At half time fans admitted they were nervous, as the Dockers were significantly behind.

“Freo tends to perform better in the second half so we can only hope,” she said.

Decisions by the umpires were greeted with a chorus of boos, while every Sydney mistake was met with cheers.

The tension was palpable as the Swans established a 28-point lead midway through the third quarter. But the Dockers came charging back.

Five consecutive Fremantle goals transformed the mood inside the Federal Hotel.

The crowd broke into a “USA” chant when the American-born Mason Cox took a vital mark and slotted in a late goal to seal the deal for the team.

Supporters jumped up and down, hugged strangers and waved scarves above their heads as the scoreboard began to turn in Fremantle’s favour.

A barricade struggled to contain the celebrations as fans jumped and clapped, some tumbling over in the energy of each goal celebration.

As the Dockers took the lead, Dylan Braidy told The West Australian he never doubted his clubs ability.

“I’ve been a fan since 1995, I was there in 2013 and I’m going to be there when they take it home again this year,” he said.

“It’s bloody brilliant to be out here tonight.”

Roars of ‘FREE-OO’ filled the streets of the portside town as euphoric fans spilled onto the streets to celebrate.
