Appeal turned down
Nathan Lyon went up for a big lbw appeal against Zak Crawley, but umpire Ahsan Raza was unmoved.
The Australians opted not to review, which was proven correct by ball-tracking showing the ball would have missed leg stump.
ENG 2-79
Crawley comes alive
Zak Crawley is looking to get going against Nathan Lyon, slog-sweeping the off-spinner for what was just the second boundary of his 58-ball stand.
He has moved along to 20, with Joe Root on 21.
ENG 2-73
Have to target someone
England appear to have a clear plan to take Nathan Lyon on, with Zak Crawley coming out of his shell in the off-spinner’s second over and Joe Root also looking to be proactive.
Australia’s seamers have been impossible to disrupt in the series so far, but going after the spinner on a day four wicket is a strategy fraught with danger.
ENG 2-67
Root taking on Lyon
Australia captain Pat Cummins has now called on Nathan Lyon and Australia’s greatest ever off-spinner has found some immediate assistance from a wearing surface.
But Joe Root has decided attack is the best form of defence, sweeping the first ball he faced from Lyon for four and following up with a reverse sweep which also went to the boundary.
ENG 2-60
That’s drinks
Drinks are being taken at Adelaide Oval with England still a long, long way behind in this Test match.
Both Zak Crawley and Joe Root are on nine, with the opener having crawled there across the course of 37 deliveries in uncharacteristic fashion.
ENG 2-49
Boland barrels in
Australia have made their first change to the bowling attack, with Scott Boland introduced in place of Mitchell Starc.
The seamer immediately sent a peach of delivery past Joe Root’s outside edge and had an edge fall short of Usman Khawaja at first slip later.
ENG 2-46
Can Root stand up?
England will surely need a massive contribution from Joe Root if they stand any chance of pulling off this record-breaking chase.
Aside from his making his first hundred on Australian soil in the first innings of the second Test, he has managed scores of zero, eight, 15 and 19 so far across the series.
ENG 2-41
What a catch!
Marnus Labuschagne has pulled off a gem of a catch!
Occupying Steve Smith’s standard position at second slip, he has hung on to a screamer the absent vice-captain would be proud of, plucking a low one-hander to his right off the bowling of Pat Cummins to send Ollie Pope on his way for 17.
It is very hard to see England’s No.3 retaining his place for the Boxing Day Test.
ENG 2-31
Fight from England’s batters
Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope are trying to do a job here.
Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins have bowled well with the new ball but England’s batters have shown good application, leaving and defending judiciously and taking what few scoring opportunities have been made available.
ENG 1-31
Anti-Bazball
England are not getting away at the rapid pace they usually like to, but Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley are fighting hard to take the shine off the new ball.
Pope drove Mitchell Starc through the covers for four and has moved to 13, with Crawley still on one from 22 balls.
ENG 1-26
