AFL: What deals will get done on the opening day of the AFL’s player swap-fest?

It’s set to be another busy period this year as clubs look to improve their lists in the early stages of the off-season.

The likes of Zak Butters, Toby Greene, Lachie Whitfield, Zach Merrett and Rowan Marshall are all set to be on the move, while at a WA level, there’s plenty of chatter around whether Jack Viney and Gryan Miers - among others - could be heading west.

Stay across all the action here!

Eagles list boss Matt Clarke talks

The West Coast list manager has addressed a range of issues straight out of the gate this morning:

  • Confirms Gyran Miers has had a medical at the club, but says: “I think it’s unlikely that Gryan makes a move west, but we’re still open to it. It’ll be just more if Geelong are.”
  • Jack Viney hasn’t made a call on his future. Expects to get a better indication in the next 24-48 hours on Viney’s interest as he weighs up whether to move his family west. “We think Jack can complement what we’ve got from a senior point of view on-field at his very best... we think physically, he can get back to pretty good health”.
  • Confirms fellow Demon Trent Rivers will be looked at
  • Matt Flynn will sign a one-year deal to stay on the Eagles list next season

Swans list boss on suspended players’ status

Sydney’s list strategy boss Chris Keane has spoken about whether he expects any of the five suspended players to be seeking any opportunities away from the club.

“They’re contracted players and required players. We’ve had no indication that any of them are seeking other opportunities,” he said.

DONE DEAL: Pendlebury move confirmed

It’s still a little hard to believe, but it’s now official: Scott Pendlebury is a player for a club not called Collingwood.

The veteran has sealed his move to Gold Coast, with the Suns giving up Pick 65 to secure one of the most decorated - and high IQ - current players.

It’s a trade rather than a free agency move, which will help Gold Coast’s compensation not being diluted ahead of Ben King’s impending exit.

O’Driscoll in Dogs’ sights, English ‘100 per cent’ off the table

Dockers speedster Nathan O’Driscoll is on the Western Bulldogs’ radar, according to Dogs list manager Michael Regan.

O’Driscoll is exploring his options after being squeezed out of Fremantle’s team for their run to the grand final, despite playing 17 games this season.

Regan acknowledged the 24-year-old is a player of interest this trade period. The family is well known to the Dogs, with Nathan’s younger brother Aiden drafted there in 2023 but failing to play a game amid having his career ended by concission issues.

Meanwhile, Tim English is going nowhere, according to Regan.

There’s been speculation about a potential shift out of the Dogs, particularly to GWS, who have moved on from ruckman Kieren Briggs. English’s netballer partner Rudi Ellis has moved to Sydney to play for the NSW Swifts.

But Regan says the ruck star is “100 per cent” staying at the Dogs.

Hawks’ surprising addition

It’s an acquisition of a current player for Hawthorn... just not a current AFL player!

The Hawks have sealed a Category B signing of former Australian water polo player Ollie Purcell.

He represented the Aussie Sharks as goalkeeper just last month. The 195cm athlete is seen as a key defensive prospect, which is where he played most of his junior and high school footy.

Viney heading west?

One of the more surprising potential moves to emerge across the past few days has been Jack Viney’s mooted shift to West Coast.

The 238-game veteran is coming off an injury-wrecked season at Melbourne where he played just one senior game this year, and he’s set to turn 33 in the opening weeks of next season.

Columnist Paul Hasleby was strong in his opinion that obtaining Viney would not be beneficial for West Coast.

DONE DEAL: Hogan on the move

One of the first deals formalised this trade period is Jesse Hogan’s shift out of GWS, with Collingwood his new home.

Pick 75 is the swap for the man who won the Coleman Medal just two years ago, with Hogan to join the Pies on a two-year deal.

Hogan mustered just 12 goals from 9 games at the Giants this season.

He’s set to become just the second Coleman medallist in the AFL era to represent three or more clubs across a career, joining former Eagles (and Bombers and Power and Pies) spearhead Scott Cummings.
