Harley’s protector?

While we wait for an update on Jack Viney’s potential move to West Coast, there’s mixed feelings about whether that shift would be beneficial for the Eagles.

Paul Hasleby was strong in his criticism of any such move, but Luke Hodge sits on the other side of the debate.

‘What you will get with Harley Reid, what you have seen over the last few years, is teams have targeted him. Teams realise that they can get under his skin,” Hodge told The West Australian.

“Jack Viney would mean he’ll have someone there to protect him.”

Schubert wants to be a Sun

Aidan Schubert has decided on his future - and he wants out at Hawthorn.

The 18-year-old key forward has requested to be traded to Gold Coast, amid plenty of competition for spots at the Hawks with Ben King’s impending arrival.

Schubert played one game for Hawthorn in their round 21 win over North Melbourne in Launceston.

King call looms

Ben King has touched down in Melbourne this morning as he prepares to join his new club Hawthorn - one way or another.

The Hawks lodged the free agent paperwork to lock in King on Tuesday, with Gold Coast today entering their last full day of deciding whether to match the offer and force a trade, or take the expected Pick 7 as compensation from the league.

Coniglio locked in

The Giants have confirmed what was flagged yesterday: Stephen Coniglio is coming back for one more season.

The 248-gamer is the last remaining inaugural Giant at the club.

“He showed throughout this year that he’s certainly still capable of having a strong impact in the side and we look forward to seeing what he can produce next year,” GWS footy manager Jason McCartney said.

“As well as his on-field performance, Stephen is such a valued voice, leader, and role model within our group and his impact in that space, especially for our younger players, is invaluable.

“We’ve been able to lock away a lot of young talent for the future and it’s nice to be able to add Stephen’s experience and leadership alongside that in what we view as an exciting time for the club.”

Blakey bidding

Nick Blakey is looming as one of the big stories of the trade period.

The star Swans defender is exploring his options off the back of his late-year suspension stemming from the Pullman Hotel incident.

He’s reportedly meeting with Gold Coast, St Kilda, Essendon and North Melbourne across today and tomorrow as he canvasses potential landing spots for a trade.

The 26-year-old has played 173 games since debuting in 2019 and was widely considered an All-Australian prospect this year - to go with his 2024 blazer - before the ban.
