AFL: After a run of five disheartening losses in a row, West Coast will face another stern test from a high-flying Melbourne at Marvel Stadium.

The optimism which abounded from the Eagles after their wins over North Melbourne and Port Adelaide earlier in the year has now well and truly faded on the back of their poor recent form, which has included triple-digit thumpings from Sydney and St Kilda to go with a loss to last-placed Richmond last weekend.

Meanwhile, the Demons — who are coached by Steven King, who was beaten by Andrew McQualter to the Eagles job two years ago — have been the AFL’s surprise packet this season, winning five of their first eight games despite losing stars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver over the off-season.

Can West Coast cause a huge upset and grab win No.3 for 2026 over Melbourne? Follow all the action in our live blog!

Five in a row

West Coast are struggling to touch the footy and the Demons have kicked the last five.

New week, same problem for the Eagles as they struggle to even be competitive.

Still plenty of time of they can tidy their disposal but the last time they were at Marvel they went down by 101 points.

Nasty knock

Harry Edwards can’t catch a break.

He gets another knock to the face while trying to tackle and it slits a hole between his eyes.

There is a lot of blood but he looks steady after his horror concussion luck this year.

Odd move

West Coast are pushing their half backs all the way up the field on attacking chains with Hough, Cole and Hutchinson all being spotted in the forward 50.

It has resulted in two coast-to-coast chains but both came undone before they could get a shot at goal.

And the second one left almost every Demon alone in their forward half for the easiest goal they will ever kick.

First blood!

West Coast get a repeat entry with Yeo on the end of a handball chain.

He botches the kick after running inside 50 but Murdock traps it and fires the ball to Reid on the run who nails the first goal.

Champion laid a nice tackle up the ground.

Underway!

Yeo starts in the middle with Kelly as well as Williams and Reid but Pickett wins the first clearance.

However, Duursma comes off half forward to apply pressure and the Eagles win the ball back.

Waterman gets high contact and misses to the left.

Sparse crowd

This game away from Melbourne’s traditional home ground at the MCG may not be played in front of a huge crowd.

According to our man on the ground Mitchell Woodcock, there looks to be fewer than 10,000 fans in the crowd.

Here we go

Both teams are now out on the ground, with the start of the game only 10 minutes away.

In some nice scenes, Melbourne’s mothers have formed part of their guard of honour and have been presented with flowers by the Demons players as they made their way out.

Operation: Stop Kozzy

If the Eagles stand any chance of pulling off a shock upset win, they may have to complete one of the hardest tasks in football: stopping Kysaiah Pickett.

The WA-raised Melbourne superstar has thrived with more time in the midfield this season and is averaging 24.3 disposals per game while also having hit the scoreboard for 12 goals.

Return of the Whopper

Young Eagle Harvey Johnston will play his first game for nearly two years against the Demons, and Andrew McQualter is delighted with his perseverence.

“He’s a good story, Whopper,” McQualter told Fox Footy.

“He actually played back and wing, predominantly, before this year for us. We moved him forward to start of this year and he’s just built his game.

“He works really hard at his craft ... we’re really excited for him.”

Mini’s thoughts

West Coast’s coach Andrew McQualter has spoken ahead of his side’s clash with Melbourne - and he has made sure his side is on guard for the Demons’ attacking prowess.

“That’s what’s been the scout for us this week - their offence has been unbelievable this year and quite different. They’re going with a lot of speed, really aggressive from the back half, but when you do that, you do leave yourself a little bit vulnerable,” McQualter told Fox Footy.

“If our defence is sharp, we can get some turnovers, we might get some looks the other way.

“I think we did get forced to play a bit slower than we would’ve liked last week. Different defences, different teams, throw different things at you. We’ve spoken about trying to attack and go a little bit quicker this week.”
