Hawthorn says Jack Ginnivan has “only scratched the surface of his potential” after luring the small forward from Collingwood in the shock of the trade period.

The Hawks believe they can help the polarising goalsneak produce the level of performance seen in his 40-goal second season after securing him from the Magpies along with pick 39 and their future second and fourth-round selections in exchange for a suite of draft picks.

It comes less than three weeks since he played in Collingwood’s premiership side, with no indication he was looking to play elsewhere in the lead-up to the trade period.

Hawthorn parted with pick 33 and its future second and third-round picks to secure the deal immediately after the final day of trading opened at 2pm on Wednesday.

Ginnivan endured a difficult third season at Collingwood after starring with 40 goals in 2022, managing only 14 games. He had a lengthy mid-year spell in the VFL before he won his spot back in the final three rounds of the home-and-away season.

He started in the Pies’ 22 for the grand final and had seven possessions but drew the ire of coach Craig McRae after attending the races at Moonee Valley the night before.

Ginnivan requested a trade to Hawthorn the day after Collingwood brought in Lachie Schultz, a prolific small forward who plays a similar role, from Fremantle.

Hawthorn list manager Mark McKenzie said he was thrilled to have brought in Ginnivan, who is set to play regularly in the Hawks’ forward line after the departure of Tyler Brockman to West Coast and Chad Wingard’s achilles injury, which will keep him out the first half of the season.

“We couldn’t be happier that Jack wanted to come to Hawthorn – a club he’s loved since he was a kid,” McKenzie said.

“We love the way he goes about his footy, he’s a clever forward who hits the scoreboard and generates a lot of energy on the field.

“Having just won a premiership at 20 years of age, we believe he’s only just scratched the surface of his potential, and we can’t wait to see just how high he can elevate his game at Hawthorn in the years to come.”

Port Adelaide made its first move of the trade period on the final afternoon, snaring Richmond premiership ruckman Ivan Soldo along with pick 50 as the Power handed over picks 41, 49, and two future picks in the second round (tied to Fremantle) and fourth round.

The Tigers thanked Soldo for his “tireless” work over 10 seasons after he was drafted as a category B rookie in 2014.

“During his time at the club, (Ivan) showed great commitment and professionalism and is a much-loved teammate,” Richmond list boss Blair Hartley said.

“We thank Ivan for his contribution to our club and wish him well in his future endeavours.”
