Incident controller reinforces health warning

Incident controller Ray Buchan reinforced the message that people experiencing symptoms from the smoke plume created by the Kwinana fire should get in touch with Health Direct.

He said the fire was now extinguished and confirmed the presence of sulfur at the warehouse.

Mr Buchan said the smoke made it hard for fire crews to get access to and extinguish the fire.

“It can be deadly if you’re sitting on top of it,” he said.

“Be aware, stay at home, close your window.”

The area is being monitored and adjustments will be made to the warning areas once the monitoring is back.

“There’s a significant amount of sulfur in there,” Mr Buchan said.

He said the biggest issue for fire crews was gaining access to the fire.

“The only way to get in there was through the smoke, so they had to be careful.

Mr Buchan said crews were battling two to three-metre flames but the bigger issue was the smoke.
