Albany Highway has been closed between Fremantle Road and Gosnells Road West after a burst pipe sent water flooding out from a service station onto the street.

A mountain of water exploded from the ground at the Ampol on the corner of Albany Highway and Gosnells Road West just after 3am.

The force of the blast was so strong it caused parts of the road to crack, with footage of the early morning drama showing a tower of water shooting up into the air and drowning the ground beneath.

Police were called to manage traffic in the area as nearby roads turned to rivers, while Water Corporation began emergency works in the area.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area, with the eastbound lanes still closed 12 hours after the water main burst.

Residents living in and around Gosnells this morning complained of poor water pressure, with some reporting brown water coming out of their taps.

A Water Corporation spokeswoman confirmed some customers were still experiencing poor pressure this afternoon but that no one was without water.

She said repairs to the main distribution line were ongoing, with crews’ top priority to reinstate the supply by tonight.

The cause of the “complex burst” is still being investigated.
