Souwest Jets’ open side record second win of season with one-goal victory over Rangers

Souwest Jets’ open side recorded their second win of the West Australian Netball League season last Wednesday, holding off a fast-finishing Rangers to win by one goal at Gold Netball Centre.
Rangers scored the first three goals of the second term to open up an early seven-goal lead but the Jets responded with a dominant run up to the final break where they outscored their opponents 26-15 to reverse their deficit into a four-goal three-quarter-time lead.
Having been moved from goal attack to goal shooter, Rangers’ Aisha Morcombe produced a 13-goal final quarter which included one which knotted the scores with just over a minute to go.
But training partner Lily Gilsenan stepped up to be the hero for the Jets, drilling a goal inside the final 30 seconds to reclaim the most slender of leads they were able to maintain until time expired.
Gilsenan led the Jets with 28 goals on the night, forming a potent combination with goal attack Meretini Fuimaono (19 goals).
With one game left in their season, the result has ensured Jets will finish in seventh position, ahead of last-placed Rangers, who are without a win for the season.
They were set to close out their season against fourth-placed West Coast Warriors at the Netball Centre on Wednesday night.
The season is now over for the club’s under-21 side, who sit sixth with a 4-9 win-loss record but could drop to seventh pending other results.
The Jets’ junior outfit went down to Rangers by 16 goals before closing out their campaign with a 10-goal loss to West Coast Warriors at Eaton Recreation Centre on Sunday.
Prolific shooter Lily Knight is set to finish the campaign sitting second on the competition’s goal-scoring charts, being 127 clear of the third-placed player ahead of the final round of matches for the season.
