South West 11-year-old raises more than $8000 to fight cancer through extraordinary feat of fundraising

An 11-year-old from the South West has raised more than $8000 to fight cancer through an extraordinary feat of fundraising. Dunsborough local Lenny Warren presented a cheque for $8400 to Cancer Council WA after a year-long fundraising effort which had him swimming in the ocean every day of 2024. The fundraising champion’s inspiration came from his dad Michael, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2022 at just 40 years old. “It was a big shock, because my dad is the fittest and healthiest person I know,” Lenny said. “He’s better now, but I thought if I raise money it might help scientists find a cure so no one else has to go through it.” Lenny’s challenge began on January 1, 2024, with a modest goal to raise $500, which he passed on the first day. He then continued swimming all the way to the new year, never missing a day, through freezing winter mornings and stormy evenings. “I chose to do it because I love everything about the ocean so much,” Lenny said. “There was one time when there was a storm with thunder and lightning while I was swimming. Some nights I forgot to swim earlier, so I had to jump in late at night.” Cancer Council WA South West regional cancer prevention co-ordinator Julie Rose said Lenny’s act was one of determination and generosity. “Lenny is an extraordinary young person, and we are incredibly grateful to him and everyone who has supported his amazing effort,” she said. “His dedication will help us continue providing vital support to West Australians affected by cancer and contribute to lifesaving cancer research. “It’s only thanks to the generosity of our community and fundraisers like Lenny that we’re able to do the work we do.” Lenny thanked his family, friends and the community for supporting him with their donations. “It was a really fun way to raise money for an important cause, and I hope some day they can find a cure for cancer,” he said.
