The Southside Demons maintained top spot on the WA Netball League ladder with a thrilling one-goal victory over the West Coast Warriors in round six action on Wednesday May 27.

In the marquee game of the First Nations Round, celebrating the history of First Nations athletes, the Demons burst out of the blocks to lead 19-12 at quarter-time, extending it to 34-25 at half-time.

But the Warriors surged back in the third quarter, outscoring the competition’s early pace-setters 20-12 to trail by just one goal. However, they could not make up the difference in the final term, with the Demons winning 62-61.

The Souwest Jets have recorded their first win of the season over the winless Rangers, 55-43.

After being competitive against the WANL’s best teams, the Jets finally got reward for their efforts, taking an early 16-10 lead in the opening quarter and maintaining control of the game throughout, with Lily Knight leading the way with a massive 50 goals.

In a grand final rematch, the Western Roar gained a measure of revenge and consigned reigning premiers Comets to their second loss of the season, 50-40, to sit a game clear in second spot on the ladder.

Comets’ Sloan Burton was playing her 100th game but Roar led from start to finish, led by Sophia Lamers with 38 goals.

Fremantle Sharks moved up to third on the ladder with a 51-42 victory over Peel Lightning.

The Sharks led all game, with Aisha Morcombe scoring 36 goals, supported by Kathryn Bryne with 14.

The competition in the men’s division is tight, with the Warriors giving the Demons their first loss of the season 55-47 on Wednesday, both sitting on two wins and one loss in first and second on the table.

Comets and Roar drew 47-47, giving both teams an identical record in third and fourth on the ladder, while Rangers got their first win of the season over league newcomers Peel Lightning 49-45. Both teams have one win and two losses, sitting in fifth and sixth place on the table.
