Rockingham Sawfish event a success

Rockingham has celebrated International Sawfish Day, with a special event at Naragebup Rockingham Regional Environmental Centre on Saturday, October 17.

More than 100 people attended the event to raise awareness for the Fitzroy River’s critically endangered freshwater sawfish and share stories and memories of the Kimberley.

The giant seven-metre sawfish art installation was a hit with children at the event – as well as the sawfish themed cake.

The Kimberley- Like Nowhere Else campaign coordinator Monique Barker said the event was a huge success.

“We are thrilled with the turnout at the event on Saturday. We had people of all ages who came along to learn about the freshwater sawfish and the importance of the Fitzroy River for its survival,” she said.

“We loved hearing stories from people who came along to the event, that had spent time at the Fitzroy River and had experienced the beauty of the region and the river’s importance for the environment, culture and the community.”

Due to the popularity of the sawfish art installation, Rockingham Regional Environment Centre have decided to showcase the sawfish for the next two weeks, so more people can learn about the species and the Fitzroy River.

Naragebup Rockingham Regional Environment Centre business development manager Barbara Sciesinski said the centre was pleased to host the event.

“It was such a pleasure to host the International Sawfish Day event and have the giant sawfish at out centre,” she said.

“We were so thrilled with the response that we’ve decided to keep the sawfish art installation at the centre for the next few weeks. It was extremely popular.”
