Secret Harbour Surf Lifesaving Club’s new surf boat named in stalwart’s honour

Secret Harbour Surf Life Saving Club unveiled its new surf boat last Friday, naming the vessel in honour of one of the club’s inaugural rowers.

The club’s long-awaited new surf boat was named in memory of SHSLSC stalwart Peter “Walesy” Wales, who recently died.

Mr Wales joined SHSLSC in 1993 when the club was in the process of moving from its clubhouse in Golden Bay to Secret Harbour.

Club president in the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons, Mr Wales was an active member of the club and in 1998 won the reserve grade State title, and in 2002 took a reserve grade men’s and an open women’s crew to Broome for the NT State titles, winning gold in both events.

Mr Wales was inducted into the WA Surf Rowers League Hall of Fame in 2007. SHSLSC presi-dent Rick Lowe said the surf boat was the first new vessel the club had received in more than 20 years.

Mr Lowe thanked major sponsors Charter Hall and Allied Pickfords for their donations.
