Bungaree Primary School students gain sustainability insights

Bungaree Primary School and Kwinana Alcoa Refinery have teamed up to promote healthy living and environmental sustainability, with students preparing and growing mobile gardens as part of the school’s wheelbarrow garden project.

Students from about 13 classrooms have worked together to plant garden beds in wheel-barrows, selecting plants based on the amount of sunlight for their location.

School science specialist Jodie Schicker said the initiative would teach students to take responsibility in planning, planting and maintaining a garden bed.

She said once the gardens were ready to harvest, parents would be invited to join classes to prepare food using herbs, tomatoes and lettuces grown in the wheelbarrows, as well as additional ingredients.

Alcoa community relations officer Scott Hansen said the project was partly funded through a small grant as part of Alcoa’s community partnership program.

He said Alcoa was happy to help fund the project, which would add long-term value to the community.
