$100k for potential students

Tranby College in Baldivis is offering $100,000 to potential students who make a difference to their communities, but need some help themselves.

Tranby’s co-educational school ethos is built on community service, with senior and junior school students providing more than 20,000-volunteer-hours last year.

Now the school’s staff and students are taking the recognition of voluntary work to a new level.

Principal Clayton Massey said 12 deserving new students who demonstrated the Tranby community spirit in active and ongoing ways, would share $100,000 to help support them with a Tranby College education.

The underlying objective of the award program is to identify new students who share Tranby College principles, and would like to join the school, but need help to cover the costs involved.

“The Spirit of Tranby Service Awards recognise potential students who have an outstanding track record of helping others in their community,” Dr Massey said.

“The award will be open for applications to November 24. It will encourage applications from young people who are active advocates for our community or environment.”

Although some other schools in WA adopt community service projects, Tranby places a central focus on community service, with every student from Kindergarten to Year 12 an active supporter of local causes. Last year, Tranby students raised more than $50,000 for community organisations.

The Spirit of Tranby Service Awards, open to potential students up to Year 12, are being launched as part of the college’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

Award recipients will be recognised at a formal event early in December.
