A man has been arrested following a violent attack outside a Sydney gym in which he allegedly stabbed his ex-partner repeatedly.

The brutal attack occurred in Alexandria on Wednesday at around 12.30 pm.

The 45-year-old man was allegedly hiding under a car outside the Crunch Fitness gym before jumping out and stabbing the 39-year-old woman in the chest, neck and ear.

Emergency services responded and the victim was treated at the scene before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious condition.

On Thursday morning, the 45-year-old man voluntarily presented himself at Dee Why Police Station, where he was arrested and taken to Manly Police Station for further questioning.
