Our Big Travel Quiz Night was HUGE

Forty five questions, 20 teams and $10,000 in travel voucher prizes from our friends at Flight Centre.

Our Big Travel Quiz Night lived up to its promise of being a bumper event.

In the Historic Ballroom at the Pagoda Resort and Spa in Como last Friday evening, questions were based on stories published in our supplements and there were plenty of games, too.

Penny Thomas and Megan French ran those … “Sit down if you’ve ever been to Bali” … and there were quite a few still standing… “And sit down if you’ve ever embarrassed yourself at karaoke”.

And then a series of “north of, south of” heads-and-tails questions… is Perth north or south of Cape Town? Is Bergen in Norway north or south of Stockholm in Sweden?

One player from each of the 20 teams came up for our paper airplane challenge … “three, two, one…” throwing the best plane they had made on the evening. A team called We Thought This Was Bingo won with a super airplane that flew straight and true.

Flight Centre travel vouchers, to the value of that $10,000 total, were handed out as games prizes and spot prizes — and, of course, for the main quiz of 45 questions.

Those questions were asked by Penny Thomas and me, in three rounds of 15. Leyanne Baillie collected scores and Connie Pyromallis and Max Ward ran the scoresheet.

Christine Sutherland, who is the matriarch of West Travel Club, hosted and kept her eye on the logistics. And us.

And Rebecca (Bec) McKenzie, who is Flight Centre’s nation leader for WA, the NT and SA, was there with 10 of the experts from Flight Centre’s 32 stores in WA. The Flight Centre crew are interesting — they spot a job and just do it.

The Flight Centre team wholeheartedly supported the evening.

It was a very tight finish to Big Travel Quiz itself.

The winning team, Densa, scored 37 points out of the 45, Roam scored 36 and The Incontinents scored 35. (Though, judging by their name, answering questions may have been the least of their problems.)

The majority of teams got two-thirds of the questions right.

It was a full-on night.

It was competitive and fun.

We’re very grateful to our Flight Centre friends, and all our guests.

And we’ll do it again.
