West Coast coach Andrew McQualter is being urged to give Bo Allen an extended run in the Eagles’ senior side after spending two weeks as the tactical sub.

It comes just days after McQualter admitted he made the wrong call on Allan, who played just eight minutes off the bench and didn’t collect a disposal against North Melbourne.

Allan has been included in the Eagles’ extended squad, but the club will confirm on Friday whether he will play a full game in the WAFL against his former side Peel Thunder or against Carlton at Optus Stadium on Sunday.

The Eagles will be without premiership defender Tom Cole because of a hamstring injury, while mid-season draftee Tom McCarthy, Clay Hall and Bailey Williams have been included into the side.

It’s been a mixed start to Allan’s short career after being taken with pick No.16, West Coast’s first selection, in last year’s draft as a ready-made AFL player.

Two bouts of illness prevented him from an early-season debut after an impressive summer on the track before he was copped a suspension in his first game.

Eagles great Glen Jakovich said Allan should be given an extended run in the side to showcase what he could do at the top level in several positions.

“Over the next three or four weeks he should be given a free run to play a full game,” Jakovich told The West Australian.

“He is their top draft pick from last year and it’s the back end of the year, he hasn’t played a lot of footy with his continuity in the last month.

“McQualter should play him full-time, not as the sub and trial him in a variety of positions. Can he play wing? Can he play half-back? Can he play on-ball?

“Give him a variety of options because I dare say he’s chewing at the bit to get out there, would be extremely excited and it’s a massive opportunity.”

McQualter conceded it was “unfair” on Allan with how he had been handled since his return to the league side.

“I have to put my hand up. I haven’t handled Bo and the sub particularly well in the last few weeks,” he told 7NEWS on Monday night.

“I think it’s still something I’m learning in my job. So, we need to support Bo a bit better, particularly being a young player.

“Putting him on the field with a couple of minutes to go is a little unfair, so we’ll work our way through that.

“I find (the sub role) really challenging, particularly when the game’s in the balance like that. You’re weary of bringing somebody on the field off unless they’re injured.”

Jakovich said he liked what he’d seen in Allan from limited exposure.

“He sees the game well on his terms, where he’s comfortable with the ball coming to him,” Jakovich said.

“Bo can win his own ball but he’s just got to build his confidence in his game which it’s been a little bit frustrating for him and obviously getting suspended didn’t help.

“He’s got to generate his own enthusiasm out there which he will because all young players generally do that but I like the fact he’s a player who can change angles as a left-footer.”
