West Coast star Reuben Ginbey will visit a surgeon on Monday as his season hangs in the balance with a quad injury.
The Eagles expect to learn the full extent of the 21-year-old’s injury tomorrow, but The West Australian understands surgery is on the table for the gun backman.
Ginbey went down with what looked to be a serious soft tissue injury in the third quarter of the Eagles’ six-point defeat to Port Adelaide at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.
His long looming absence is set to seriously test the Eagles’ defensive depth.
Ginbey injured his quad as he chased down Power forward Mitch Georgiades, trying to prevent what was almost always going to be a certain goal in the 11.11 (77) to 10.11 (71) defeat.
Eagles coach Andrew McQualter conceded it “didn’t look good” as the Eagles pondered how to replace arguably their most important player.
“It made me a little bit sad, as I imagine it did for all of our Eagles supporters,” McQualter said after Saturday night’s game.
“But we don’t know (how severe it is). We’ll go away, we’ll do all the tests required, and see what happens.”
Ginbey was lauded during the week leading into the clash against the Power for his shutdown role on Essendon forward Nate Caddy, which led to calls for him to be considered in the All-Australian side.
He also re-signed for a further three seasons, with the East Perth product now contracted until the end of 2030.
