The son of West Coast premiership star Michael Braun has been added to WA’s under-18 squad on the back of a record-breaking performance at WAFL colts level.

Noah Braun — whose father Michael played 228 games for the Eagles, including their 2006 flag — amassed 50 disposals for Claremont against Perth earlier this month, the most of any player in a single underage WAFL game.

The 17-year-old missed out on an initial 39-player squad for the upcoming national championships last month, but has now been added to the group alongside Swan Districts bottom-ager Taj Allan.

Braun was given the chance to play against the under-18s for a WAFL under-20 side in a scratch match on May 16 and impressed, finishing with 20 disposals from the wing.

WA will begin their championships campaign against South Australia at Mineral Resources Park on June 13.

Meanwhile, Swans’ Leo Steed and Tiger George Gale have been locked in as the side’s co-captains.

Steed has only been intermittently involved with the underage program this year due to commitments at league level, where he has played each of his side’s last six games.

The midfielder-forward produced his most impressive performance of the season on Saturday, winning 18 disposals, laying eight tackles and kicking two goals in a 40-point loss to Subiaco.

Ball-winner Gale accumulated 28 disposals in the under-18s game against the WAFL under-20s and kicked what proved to be the winning goal in the final minutes.

Coach Marc Webb said the pair had garnered votes from nearly all of their peers.

“The real positive for Leo is that despite his inability to play many trial games because of his senior football commitments, he’s still held in such high esteem to be selected,” Webb said.

“Steedy is a dogged competitor and really led the way in the pre-season with his standards and work rate.

“Galey is another one who’s grown his game and had such a big impact as well.

“They’re two quality people and we’re excited to have them leading.”

A seven-player leadership group is rounded out by Lucas Robinson (South Fremantle), Benji van Rooyen, Harper Banfield (both Claremont), Fin Yeo (East Fremantle) and Harvey Spawton-Guy (West Perth).

Axel Walsh — a bottom-ager in the under-18 side who is considered one of the country’s best 2027 prospects — made an utterly dominant return to school football on Saturday.

The smooth-moving 201cm ruckman won 44 disposals to go with 43 hit-outs, leading Trinity College to an upset two-point win over Alcock Cup holders Hale School.
