Geary missed the majority of the 2019 season because of a fractured fibula, which he suffered upon returning from a badly corked thigh that required surgery.

The veteran’s latest setback occurred during a training session on Friday morning.

The Game AFL 2024

Geary signed a one-year contract extension last year after helping the Saints return to finals for the first time since 2011.

The veteran is a much-loved figure at St Kilda, having started on the club’s rookie list before being appointed Nick Riewoldt’s successor as captain in 2017.

“Gears is one of the best leaders in the game and his influence on our group and our entire club is enormous,” coach Brett Ratten said last year.

“He is an incredibly resilient person.

“We have seen that first hand over the past few years with the way he has dealt with his own injury setbacks.

“But also the challenges we’ve been through as a club.”
