Austrian Olympic luge slider Wolfgang Kindl has become a father for the second time, and watched his wife giving birth via a video call on his mobile phone.

Kindl told broadcasters ORF that the child was not due for another two months.

"It was really very surprising when the call came this morning, and then it started. I am very happy that everything went well," he said on Monday.

Kindl said due to the early birth his wife and the newborn will stay in hospital for a few weeks and he hopes to pay a brief visit during the Games.

The former world champion finished eighth in the men's event on Sunday and is also due to compete in double luge on Wednesday and the team relay on Thursday.
