Hayden Young’s injury scare against Geelong was a moment that sent a feeling of shock and panic through every Freo fan at Optus Stadium - including the player himself.

Young spent the best part of a minute trying to gather himself after hurting his knee following a tackle from Sam De Koning in the third term of last Thursday’s win.

Amid a collective groan of concern from the crowd as he tried and failed to take his free kick, Young left the ground in what initially appeared to be a fresh issue to add to his recent injury history.

But the important left-footer got the all-clear from doctors, returned to action, and has had no ill-effects on the training track this week.

Speaking about the injury scare for the first time, Young on Thursday said he had “panicked a little bit” in the immediate aftermath of the tackle before realising it would be nothing serious.

“I was a little bit shocked, to be honest,” Young said on 96FM.

“I’ve never hurt my knee. My knee was sore, and when I tried to get up and put weight through it, I couldn’t.

“Honestly, I panicked a little bit. I thought ‘what does this mean?’

“The umpire was like, ‘can you take the kick?’ and I was like ‘I don’t think I can really put weight through it at the moment.”

Young said despite the scary few minutes, it had not taken him long to feel relief about not having to be sidelined.

“The great thing was by the time I got off the field, I was able to get weight through it again, and the pain had gone down a little bit,” he said.

“The doctors were really happy with it structurally and I was able to get moving and get back out there.”

Young said his knee had “felt really good” at training on Wednesday as the Dockers turn their focus to Gold Coast - and a potential 14th consecutive win - on Sunday at Optus Stadium.
