Fremantle veteran David Mundy will climb into the top 10 on the VFL/AFL’s all-time games played list on Saturday and if he gets his way he’ll jump a few further rungs yet.

Mundy, who turns 37 next month, will equal Bernie Quinlan’s mark of 366 games when the Dockers take on Carlton at Marvel Stadium.

While Brent Harvey’s record 432 games looks safe, Mundy has no intention of voluntarily retiring at the end of the season.

“Within games, (I’m) feeling really good,” he said.

“Recovering and pulling up from games, more importantly, really well. Still getting a whole lot of training in during the week in-season.

“And I still love the Monday to Friday grind. The competitive nature of AFL football, I’m still really thriving on that. So I’ll be here until they kick me out.”

The most travelled player in football history, Mundy has covered more than 885,000km in the air and played in the 200th games of every Fremantle player to reach the milestone, including his own back in 2014.

If Mundy played every game for the rest of the season including three finals, he would sit equal seventh on 378 games with Simon Madden.

“I certainly didn’t know this was coming,” Mundy said.

“But in the couple of days since, I guess the magnitude of football it represents and the challenges and barriers overcome from a WA-based team, I think puts it into perspective that it’s pretty rare.

“So very proud and it makes me reflect on the help that I’ve had behind the scenes from people at the football club, my family and friends and people away from football. I guess it means a lot to me, but it means a lot to a lot of people.”

Mundy attributed his durability to “a fair bit of luck” in avoiding contact injuries throughout his career, as well as a fastidious attention to detail when it came to his personal preparation.

One of three survivors from Fremantle’s 2013 grand final team along with Nat Fyfe and Michael Walters, Mundy was 30 and the Dockers’ fourth-oldest player when he played in their last final in 2015. He is now on track to add another finals campaign at the age of 37 on the back of the club’s 2022 resurgence.

“It’s certainly been a long time out and something that has been a grinding focus for the entire club over those years,” Mundy said.

“One thing I’m reflecting on a lot at the moment is that these opportunities aren’t given. We don’t have any right.

“We have to take what we’ll get and what we’ve achieved so far this year has been on the back of really hard work and (being) really dedicated to our processes and our connections. It’s something we’re not taking for granted.”

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir backed Mundy’s ambition to play on in 2023, which could bring him to the 400-game mark if he remained injury free.

“If he’s willing to go on again and he’s in the form he’s in at the moment, I’m happy to have him around,” Longmuir told SEN.

“He’s been a great of our club and he continues to be really invested and he continues to help us as coaches and guide our younger players. We’ll cross that bridge when it comes, but he’s still tracking really well.”
