The health of Fremantle’s list is so strong that even the club’s medical team are amazed by how many players are available each week as Hayden Young and Sean Darcy push to play against Port Adelaide this weekend.
The Dockers had a remarkable 43 players available to train on Tuesday morning with only young forward Charlie Nicholls spending the entire session focusing on his recovery from a finger injury.
Young (groin) completed the full session and was part of the starting midfield alongside Luke Jackson, Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw during match simulation. Darcy, who was rested for Thursday night’s win over Sydney, played as the B-Team ruckman while Mason Cox started in the forward line.
Such was the depth of Fremantle’s team, they started their 18 v 18 contest with Luke Ryan and Shai Bolton on the bench and still had Darcy, Cox, Jaeger O’Meara, Matt Johnson and Isaiah Dudley in the B-Team.
Key defender Brennan Cox said the fitness and medical staff had done an extraordinary job.
“It probably speaks to you know our S&C (Strength and Conditioning) and physio team and the way they’ve been able to train us over the pre-season and the work we’ve done in the gym. It’s been unbelievable,” he said.
“I think we had nearly a full list, a full healthy list the other day. I was speaking to one of the physios, and he’s never seen a full list here, fully fit. So if we can do that, that’ll be pretty cool.”
All eyes will be on Young and Darcy this week as the Dockers decide whether to pick them for Saturday’s clash against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.
Cox, who will play his 150th game for the Dockers, understands the significance of what it would mean if the pair are selected.
“It’s exciting. Obviously, both have had interrupted years and even last year, but to see them back on the field and putting their hand up, you know, I’m excited to see what they can do if they come in,” he said.
Corey Wagner (calf) also trained well while Sam Sturt, who hasn’t played any footy in almost 12 months, did the majority of the session.
Fremantle’s depth and lack of injuries is in stark contrast to Port Adelaide who lost star midfielder Zak Butters and key forward Mitch Georgiades last weekend, and then had Jason Horne-Francis suspended. Lachie Jones injured his ribs during the loss to the Saints but hasn’t been ruled out yet.
The Power were already missing captain Connor Rozee and Cox said that was an example of how tough it is for teams when injuries strike.
“Obviously Port on the weekend have four big outs, and we just keep being able to field our best team,” he said.
“It does put a bit of pressure on, and it also allows us to gain a lot of continuity with with each other, and keep playing. I feel like as the season goes on, we just keep gelling and gelling and keep getting better. “I feel like it does build a little bit of pressure.”
