Fremantle Dockers lock away AFLW stars Kara and Ebony Antonio ahead of sixth season
Fremantle have re-signed star couple Kara and Ebony Antonio as the Dockers continue their hunt for an AFLW premiership.
Kara Antonio, who has captained the club since the competition’s inception, has put pen to paper on a one-year deal, while her wife and 2018 best and fairest Ebony has re-signed for the next two seasons.
“It’s been a very interesting five years. Playing alongside your wife is really enjoyable, we are really lucky, and we never take it for granted,” Kara said.
“It was a no-brainer us signing together and whatever that entails over the next year we just want to play as much footy together.
“We have really embraced our roles at the footy club, we love it and can’t wait to play another year together and hopefully we can see success next season which is something that we are both striving for.”
Kara, 29, played made the move to the forward line last season after a personal-best pre-season.
“Playing a different kind of role on field really opened my eyes to what could be in the future,” she said.
“The mind is fresh and healthy, and the body is feeling really good as well.
“I’m not done yet and I’m really excited to continue what we have started down at the club.”
The Antonios’ re-signing is the cherry on top of a big fortnight for the Dockers, who have already locked away Ange Stannett, Janelle Cuthbertson, Steph Cain, Tiah Toth, Jasmin Stewart, Bianca Webb, Matilda Sergeant and Mikayla Hyde ahead of next season which starts in December.
Coach Trent Cooper has also signed a contract extension, keeping him at the helm for a further two seasons.
The Dockers traded utility Evie Gooch to West Coast on Wednesday, while Leah Mascall and Alex Williams retired at the end of the season.
