Fremantle are expecting leading goal kicker Rory Lobb to take on his old side Greater Western Sydney in the final round, despite subbing him out of Saturday night’s fiery western derby win as he laboured with more shoulder pain.

The injury clouds over key forward pair Lobb and Matt Taberner (calf) loom as the Dockers’ most significant issue as they prepare for their first finals series in seven years.

Fremantle’s 24-point win over West Coast, 9.17 (71) to 7.5 (47), guaranteed them a home final but the chase for a coveted top-four spot remains the aim ahead of next Saturday’s clash with the Giants in Canberra. Captain Nat Fyfe is expected to make his return from a hamstring injury.

With Brisbane and Melbourne to meet on Friday night to ensure one of them loses, the Dockers will need to defeat GWS and have Sydney lose one game or Collingwood lose both their remaining matches to secure the double chance.

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir predicted Lobb would be available to play next week, despite the AFL’s medical sub rule stating it must be “reasonably determined the player will be medically unfit to participate in any match for at least the next 12 days”.

Lobb, who went goalless from seven disposals, was subbed out late in the game and had ice on his troublesome right shoulder, having battled through after appearing to be in significant pain following a third-quarter blow.

“I’m expecting him to play,” Longmuir said.

“Players play plenty of times after they’ve been subbed out. You could tell that he was carrying his arm around, so he’s got an injury.

“He’s sore, but we don’t think it’s too much significant. He just got a stinger on it and couldn’t go on tonight, but we think he’ll be right after seven days hopefully.”

The Dockers led by four points at half-time before running out comfortable winners in front of 53,816 fans, the biggest crowd at Optus Stadium this season.

Fremantle had 26 scoring shots to 12 and decisive edges in the contested ball (149-125), clearance (46-34) and inside 50 (57-44) counts.

“I expected what we got from West Coast,” Longmuir said.

“They’ve been really competitive. They brought really good pressure and we knew that they would bring good physicality.

“I think we took a step forward with dealing with wet weather. I thought we were a little bit more direct in the conditions than what we have been. We didn’t try and chip it around and go lateral and be safe in the conditions.”

Longmuir, a former teammate of David Mundy, said he found the retiring veteran’s farewell lap with his family emotional.

“I was really proud of our supporters for sticking around and showing Dave off the way they did,” he said.

“It was a special moment in our club’s history and the player deserved that moment. He’s done a lot for our footy club and deserves to be sent out the right way. So that was special.”
