Europa League success unlikely to spare Ange Postecoglou the axe at Tottenham

Not even Europa League glory will save Ange Postecoglou’s job at Tottenham Hotspur.
That’s the belief from former Socceroos star Robbie Slater following Spurs’ embarrassing 5-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Monday morning (AEST).
While the win sealed the English Premier League title for Reds, Tottenham’s loss continued the London club’s shocking domestic season.
Spurs have now lost 19 Premier League games in a season, matching the club record from 1993-94 for the most league defeats in a single campaign.
In all likelihood, former Socceroos boss Postecoglou would already have been axed by now if not for his team’s Europa League run,
Spurs have reached the last four of the competition, with the first-leg of their semi-final against Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt taking place on Friday morning (AEDT) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Winning the Europa League would secure Spurs their first trophy since 2008 and also earn the club in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
However, Slater doesn’t believe that will be enough to spare Postecoglou from the axe.
“No matter what happens in Europe, I think he’s gone,” Slater said.
“They have already lost 19 Premier League games this season and there are probably more to come because they’ve got some tough games to go.”
While Spurs can’t be relegated due to Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton already confirmed for the drop, they will fall to 17th on the Premier League ladder if they lose to West Ham on Sunday.
Apart from the Hammers, Spurs also meet Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Brighton – currently placed 12th, seventh and ninth respectively – before the end of the season.
Postecoglou said it was a “juggling act” in terms of choosing teams for Premier League and Europa League duties.

His decision to rest a host of players – including key central defensive pair Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero – on Monday proved costly.
“When you’re facing the best (Liverpool), you pay that price,” Postecoglou said.
“A lot of our players have missed a lot of this season with injuries and it wasn’t just about bringing them back but managing their minutes because obviously we want them ready (for the Europa League semi-final).
“Guys like Micky and Romero could have played (against Liverpool) but they’ve missed so much of the season that we’ve just got to be really careful about when we use them.
“I had made a lot of changes but I just felt it was necessary. It’s obviously affecting the team and the team’s performance, and I take responsibility for that, but with the ultimate goal being ready for (Friday morning).”
