Melissa Wu was planning a pizza party to watch the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony on television.

Instead, team officials have changed the diving stalwart's plans: she'll be carrying the Australian flag at Monday night's ceremony.

"We were planning a pizza party in the village," Wu said.

"We have all been focused on comp and it's a bit stressful when you're in comp, so we were just going to enjoy it and relax."

Wu has been given the honour after competing at her fifth Commonwealth Games.

The 30-year-old is a triple gold medallist - her latest gold came in Birmingham in the synchronised 10m platform with 14-year-old Charli Petrov, the youngest member of Australia's team.

Wu will be the sole flagbearer and lead about 250 Australian athletes and officials into Alexander Stadium.

"I will definitely be savouring the moment," she said.

"It's going to be spectacular.

"I am so excited, it will be such an amazing feeling to lead that team out, it just means so much to me.

"I will be bit overwhelmed but I'm just going to really take it all in and enjoy it, it's going to be a great moment."

Australia's chef de mission Petria Thomas said Wu's accolade was richly deserved.

"Melissa competed at her fifth Games which is an incredible achievement in itself," Thomas said.

"She has been an outstanding representative of Australia for a number of years now."
