Bondi shooting: Western Force and Wallabies rugby star Ben Donaldson pays tribute to Peter ‘Marzo’ Meagher

Western Force star and Wallabies fly-half Ben Donaldson has paid tribute to Bondi Beach terrorist attack victim Peter ‘Marzo’ Meagher as the community rallies around his beloved Randwick Rugby Club. Mr Meagher was one the 15 people who lost their lives in the shooting as the city continues to grapple with Sunday’s horrifying events. Donaldson hails from Sydney and spent his club rugby days at Randwick. Mr Meagher was the grandson of Wallabies Hall of Fame member Wally Meagher and a beloved member, volunteer, photographer and first grade manager of the rugby club. Donaldson said the events hit closer to home given his association with Randwick and everyone connected with the club was feeling the loss of Meagher. “He was someone who we all knew quite dearly at Randwick. He was just down there taking photos, doing what he loved, and was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he told The West Australian. “Sending love to him, to Marzo and his family and everyone involved with that. I know the rugby club has got behind his family, and they all got together the other day.” Donaldson said the Meagher family were embedded within the rugby club and had been for generations. “Him and his brothers and his family have been around the rugby club for who knows how long? 70 years, maybe,” he said. “Ever since I started there, he was the photographer down there. Just through passion, he was always willing to help out. “He refereed a few games, and then he came on board as the first grade manager, all voluntary, for three or four years. “He was one of the nicest blokes you’d ever meet, always asking questions, always willing to put his hand up for any job, and that’s what makes club rugby what it is. “He’s going to be a big loss for the club, but I know Randwick have a few things in place moving forward to celebrate his life.”
