Dyson's Hawks denied as McCollum game-winner waved away
Dyson Daniels has played his part in a frenetic finish as Atlanta gave up ground to New York, who snapped the Hawks' 13-game home winning streak in dramatic fashion.
CJ McCollum's half-court heave at the buzzer was ruled no good after a review, ensuring the Knicks held onto a 108-105 win on Monday (Tuesday AEST).
Daniels (11 points and 12 rebounds) had fouled out on the previous play, sending Jalen Brunson to the line to hit two free-throws that kept their lead to three.
McCollum then collected an inbounds pass near the free-throw line and took two dribbles before launching a shot that banked in.
But replays showed the ball was still in his hands as time expired.
It was the Hawks' first home loss since early February and came without Daniels' Boomers teammate Jock Landale, who injured his ankle after being lazily pulled down on a lay-up by Goga Bitadze in their big defeat of Orlando last week.
Brunson led New York with 30 points and 13 assists, and Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.
MVP chants erupted in State Farm Arena as a 17-point fourth quarter from Brunson carried New York to their 51st win of the season.
The sides meet again on Wednesday (Thursday AEST), with the Knicks into third place in the Eastern Conference, six wins clear of the fifth-placed Hawks.
Entering the final week of the regular season, Atlanta are five wins adrift of the Cavaliers, who ousted Memphis 142-126.
The San Antonio Spurs held on to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 115-102 after Victor Wembanyama (17 points) left in the first half due to a left rib contusion.
He checked out and went back to the locker room, eventually returning to the floor to cross the 15-minute threshold.
That means the appearance will count as his second and final "near-miss" exemption to the 65-game rule that qualifies him for the NBA's regular-season awards.
Wembanyama is the consensus favourite for Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-NBA, as well as a contender for MVP.
He needs to play in one of the Spurs' final three games this week to reach the 65-game mark.
In Denver, fit-again Boomers talent Matisse Thybulle continued his impactful return with Portland, hitting four-of-six triples in his 14 points and adding five steals in the Trail Blazers' 137-132 overtime loss.
Nikola Jokic (35 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists) starred for the Nuggets.
In Orlando, the Magic withstood a fourth-quarter rally and closed on a 14-2 run to beat the visiting Detroit 123-107.
The Magic (43-36), Charlotte Hornets (43-36) and Philadelphia (43-36) are tied for seventh in the Eastern Conference, a half-game behind the Toronto Raptors (43-35).
The Pistons (57-22) clinched the East's top seed for the first time since 2006-07 last week.
