Kane Cornes has slammed the decision to award Brisbane the 2020 AFL Grand Final, warning fans to prepare for the “worst spectacle you’ve even seen”.

Speaking on the Sunday Footy Show, Cornes said the night conditions at the Gabba would make the match “really ordinary”.

“Whilst I understand the announcement of the Gabba, and it makes sense, I just think the spectacle is going to be really ordinary,” he said.

“So get ready for maybe the worst spectacle you’ve ever seen, except for ones in torrential rain.”

Cornes highlighted the basic skill errors in Friday night’s Collingwood-Brisbane clash, which was played at the Gabba, as an example of what fans should expect.

“Expect the grand final to be worse than (the Lions/Collingwood match)… It’s going to be four goals to five in a night grand final in the most dewy conditions we’ve ever seen,” he warned.

“Maybe the AFL didn’t think this through.”

Triple premiership star and former Brisbane Lion Simon Black also spoke out about the less than ideal conditions.

“I tell you what guys, we’ve never played footy in October up here (in Brisbane) but it gets really dewy,” he said on SEN.

“The ball becomes a tablet, a bit like soap. Expect ball handling to be tricky.”

Ex-Port Adelaide skipper Hamish Harlett has also warned the conditions won’t suit his side.

“I’m not sure that the best brand or style of our game will be able to be played during a night game, I think particularly up in Brisbane at the end of October when it’s a bit slippery and stormy, perhaps we won’t get the best game of football we can present,” he said on ABC.

“When you get a nice dry, sunny day, whether it be in Melbourne or Adelaide or Perth, it promotes fantastic, skilful, fast football, whereas if things can get a bit slippery, you might find a bit more of a scrappier game, contest to contest, just surge the ball forward.

“We’ll wait and see how it all unfolds and hopefully we’re there when that day does come.”

The comments come after the AFL this week announced the Gabba as the 2020 grand final venue.

It will be played at night given it clashes with the prestigious Cox Plate Day on October 24.

In a stunning move, the AFL snubbed Perth’s Optus Stadium as a back-up venue and instead named Adelaide Oval as the second choice should Brisbane not be suitable in the changing COVID-19 climate.
