As fundraising to fight motor neurone disease reaches fever pitch for another year, Fremantle ruckman Sean Darcy is getting behind FightMND and their “incredible” cause.

FightMND was established by a group including AFL legend Neale Daniher in 2014, after the Essendon legend and former Melbourne coach was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease while working as an administrator at West Coast.

The 12th edition of the showpiece Big Freeze game between Melbourne and Collingwood, which has raised tens of millions of dollars for the cause, will take place on Victoria’s King’s Birthday public holiday on June 8.

Speaking from a Bunnings Warehouse store as part of their partnership with FightMND, Darcy said it was heartening to see how the entire AFL industry had rallied behind the charity over the years.

“It’s a great cause. The work that they’ve done over the last decade has been incredible,” Darcy said.

“Melbourne do a really good job at showcasing and trying to get the support of the AFL behind it.

“Seeing the support that’s been thrown behind it and how terrible a disease it is and how much money they’ve raised, anything we can do to raise money is incredible.”

Big Freeze beanies have become a staple of wardrobes throughout the colder months, and Darcy said he always looked forward to when they became available.

“I think I’ve got 10 of these beanies now,” he said.

“You’ll see plenty of the boys wearing these around in the cold winter months — they’re pretty warm and pretty fashionable.”

All money raised from Bunnings’ sausage sizzles today will go towards FightMND, and Big Freeze beanies and buckets are also on sale in stores now.
