Fremantle veteran Luke Ryan says his side’s review of their September campaign did not include the final four minutes of the grand final, when Brisbane ripped what would have been a first premiership cup from their grasp.
With only 197 seconds left on the clock in the season decider, the Dockers held a 17-point lead after Pat Voss converted a set shot from near the top of the goal square.
But after the bells of ‘Wharfie Time’ rang out, the Lions responded by kicking four goals in a scintillating patch which secured their third flag in a row and left their opponents utterly heartbroken.
Ryan said there was no discussion of or vision shown from the last quarter of the grand final during his side’s team-wide meeting on Thursday.
“We actually spoke about the whole finals as a review, not so much the grand final, just because we got (the qualifying final against) Hawthorn wrong, we got a few bits right (in the semifinal) against Geelong and then Sydney as well,” Ryan told 6PR.
“I’m not sure if we will watch it in pre-season, but we will need to take some learnings out of it — if it’s not vision, talking about it, or coming up with a new strategy.
“I’m not sure how JL (coach Justin Longmuir) is going to do it, but I’m sure we’re going to talk about it.
“You can’t really block it out, just because of how close we were.”
After conceding he had found it difficult to move on from the grand final in the week following the game, Ryan declared he had no doubt his side would “be back and get better”.
“We don’t want to rock up on grand final day and then, next year, we’re not in finals or we’re not competing for a top-four spot. We’re focusing on finishing in the top four for a long time,” he said.
“I feel like we’ve got the foundations there and we’ve got the confidence in ourselves we belong on the biggest stage.
“We don’t need to get 20 per cent (better), we can go one, two, three per cent and hopefully sustain that for a long time.”
