West Coast and Fremantle have been recognised with a combined seven players in the AFL’s 2020 All-Australian squad.

Star ruckman Nic Naitanui, running machine Andrew Gaff, flying forward Liam Ryan and ever-reliable defender Brad Sheppard round out the Eagles’ nominees.

Naitanui is vying for his second All-Australian nod, with his previous honour coming back in the 2012 season.

Gaff (two) is also looking to add to his tally, while Sheppard and Ryan are yet to receive a prestigious jacket.

Ryan (25 goals) is in competition for a spot against fellow small forwards Dan Butler (27 goals) and Tom Papley (26 goals).

Meanwhile for the Dockers, in-form forward Matt Taberner and star defender Luke Ryan have been included in the extended squad for the first time, while captain Nat Fyfe was a lock.

Fyfe is eyeing off his fourth All-Australian blazer, with the squad to be reduced to 22 on Thursday night.

With two key forwards the traditional selection criteria, Taberner faces stiff competition against this year’s Coleman medallist Tom Hawkins (42 goals) and runner-up Charlie Dixon (32).

WA product Sam Menegola has been named for Geelong, while teammate Patrick Dangerfield is eyeing off his eighth inclusion in the side.

Only wooden-spooners Adelaide, North Melbourne and Gold Coast are without representation in the 40-man group.

The two most notable omissions from the squad are Kangaroos ruckman Todd Goldstein, with Naitanui and Gawn claiming the two ruck positions ahead of him, and Melbourne defender Steven May.

West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern won’t add to his four blazers this year, with his 2020 season marred by thumb and hamstring injuries.

There are ten players in today’s squad who could earn back-to-back call-ups, with Harris Andrews, Marcus Bontempelli, Dangerfield, Fyfe, Max Gawn, Dylan Grimes, Hawkins, Jack Macrae, Lachie Neale and Scott Pendlebury all included in last year’s 22.
