AFL journalist Mark Robinson has lashed out at the penalty handed to superstar coach Nathan Buckley, arguing Collingwood should have been hit with a $200,000 fine.

In an extraordinary rant delivered on AFL 360 on Monday night, Robinson said Buckley and his assistant coach Brenton Sanderson had no excuse for breaching the strict COVID-19 protocols when they played a game of tennis with former Aussie star Alicia Molik in Perth.

“You cannot penalise the Collingwood coach the same as you penalise Trent Cotchin’s wife’s indiscretion of going for a facial and whatever went up in Queensland,” Robinson said.

“The (WAGs, families) are part of the community, but they’re not part of the tight-knit (AFL). Bucks is a coach, mate.

“The AFL should’ve slapped them with an unconditional, no suspended, $100,000 fine, maybe $200,000 fine and say ‘You’ve got to accept more responsibility for the mistake you’ve made’.

“Don’t suspend him, don’t stand him down as coach.”

Robinson said the AFL had set a tough precedent when it suspended Adelaide assistant Ben Hart for six weeks for his club’s COVID-19 training protocol breach – when the Crows trained in two groups of eight instead of pairs back in May.

But the latest penalty dished out to Collingwood didn’t meet those standards.

“The Collingwood coach breaks the protocols and gets slapped with a $25,000 fine,” Robinson said.

“This is so out of whack.

“The AFL had the opportunity - and stop telling us it's a reminder. We don’t need any more reminders. The whole world’s on reminder.

“Do your job and say ‘No more’. Hundred, $200,000 fine. Next time you do it, take premiership points off them.

“Because that’s three (indiscretions). Steele Sidebottom, Nathan Buckley, there’s no third. There’s no ‘Ohh, we feel for Bucks’. Of course I feel for Bucks, but come on, we’ve got more at stake than this.”

“They suspended a guy for six weeks, Ben Hart. So they set a standard.

“I just think in the last 36 hours the AFL would like to have their time again.”
