It’s considered by many to be the greatest Origin match ever played.

So what better time to re-live the 1986 epic - or watch it for the first time - than in the lead-up to Saturday’s bout between WA & Victoria?

A full replay of the memorable match will be screened on 7Mate and 7plus from 8.15am on Saturday morning, whetting the appetite for the return of the Origin format when the Sandgropers and Vics clash at Optus Stadium on Saturday evening. That clash will begin at 4.40pm, with 7mate’s broadcast to start from 4pm.

The 1986 classic at Subiaco Oval was the final Origin clash before the introduction of West Coast into the AFL the following year, and features some legendary names and an even more legendary finish.

The Game AFL 2026

Brian Peake booted seven goals as a surprise full-forward in Ron Alexander’s side. Gary Buckenara kicked a superb snapped major to set up the win late in the final term.

And amid a fourth quarter that saw the lead change seven times, Wayne Blackwell saved the day for WA with an unbelievable smother of a Brian Royal shot on goal that might have seen the result go the other way.

It’s a classic that needs to be seen to be believed - and you can see it in its entirety on 7Mate and 7plus. If Saturday’s Origin reboot is anything like that match, we’re in for a treat.
