WA Liberal senator Mathias Cormann opens up about Liberal leadership spill, winning Federal election

Mathias Cormann has once again proved he is the Terminator of Australian politics. Just as Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed in the cult Hollywood movie, “I’ll be back”, the man who sounds like the action star — and who has jokingly used his famous one-liner — has emerged from the Federal election stronger and, perhaps, even more powerful than ever. Apart from Prime Minister Scott Morrison, it can be argued that no Liberal has emerged a bigger winner than Senator Cormann. The Belgian-born senator, who arrived in Australia 25 years ago barely able to speak English and who has risen to become the nation’s Finance Minister, is everywhere since the “miracle” election win of May 18. He’s on television, on the front page of newspapers and on radio as he prepares to negotiate the next big deal in the Senate, delivering the Federal Coalition’s much-vaunted $158 billion tax cuts. And he’s loving it. “There will be no deals,” he says of his conversations with the Senate crossbench. “The Australian people have spoken. I am calling on Labor to act in the national interest and do the right thing and support the plan.” Polling — and most political commentators — predicted Senator Cormann and his Liberal colleagues would find themselves in Opposition after the election. But he brushes aside any suggestion he has risen from the dead — like the Terminator. “What do you mean I’m back,” he says, his voice completely deadpan. “I never left.” Proving he does actually have a sense of humour, Senator Cormann has a good laugh when reflecting on using Schwarzenegger’s one-liner. “You have to use whatever you can to get your message across,” he says. “Yes, it is true, I might have called (Bill Shorten) an economic girlie man.” Senator Cormann has his heavyweight fans. Just this week, one of WA’s most-respected businessmen, former Wesfarmers boss Richard Goyder, gave this appraisal of the WA senator. “I am a huge fan. I think he is smart, he is articulate and articulates on the economy really well. “I think he’s been good for WA in managing his way through with others on GST, but also for the country. “If you look at the fiscal position of the country after his terms as Finance Minister, we are in much better shape. “He has high integrity. “He’s the definition of a politician who gets things done, who speaks on what he believes in, but does it in a way with integrity. Therefore, he’s respected. “The job that he has had to do in navigating legislation through the Senate is the sort of stuff most of us would find incredibly challenging.” Labor Premier Mark McGowan added: “Whether it has been negotiating a fair outcome on WA’s share of the GST or major infrastructure funding for this State, he has listened, understood and acted on our conversations.” But not everyone is so glowing. How the leadership spill played out Senator Cormann’s decision last year to withdraw his support for former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, and the demise of Turnbull during that tumultuous week in August, left his reputation severely dented. His decision to back Peter Dutton, ahead of Scott Morrison and Julie Bishop, in the second and final leadership vote on August 24 left many people scratching their heads. Ms Bishop said of Senator Cormann earlier this year: “You still wish he could explain his motives in backing Peter Dutton over Malcolm Turnbull and causing enormous instability within the Liberal Party.” Mr Goyder agreed that Senator Cormann had been bruised. “He took a reputational hit (when Malcolm Turnbull lost the leadership), no doubt. “But I would think he would feel completely vindicated with what happened in the election. “It’s easy for us to judge people, but you have to be inside to really know what’s gone on.” Senator Cormann has been reluctant to speak publicly about the events of August 21-24, but this week he agreed to open up about what he describes as one of the toughest weeks of his life. “As the most senior member of the Cabinet who was not a potential candidate for prime minister, I found myself in a unique position to help resolve this, ultimately for the country, by helping to resolve it for the government and for the Liberal Party,” he said. “It was awful. It was incredibly hard. I did not enjoy it one bit. I wish I had never found myself in that position. It was one of the toughest weeks of my working life. “But I did and I had a responsibility to step up and make judgments about the best, or rather the least bad, way forward in the circumstances. “I couldn’t just go and hide under a carpet and hope it would all go away. “If I did that, we would probably be in Opposition now. That’s the truth of it.” Senator Cormann argues with sadness that Mr Turnbull was the master of his own demise. He said Mr Turnbull should never have called a “surprise partyroom vote” on his leadership on August 21 — a vote that saw him severely weakened by a result that gave him 48 votes and Peter Dutton 35. Senator Cormann points out that he voted for Mr Turnbull in that ballot. But he says the vote was too close for an incumbent prime minister and that it was his and several other Liberals’ belief that Mr Turnbull’s position was “irretrievable” from that point. In a face-to-face meeting on the morning of August 22, Senator Cormann told Mr Turnbull that he had lost majority support in the partyroom and to hold another vote “to resolve the issue with more certainty”. History shows that Mr Turnbull insisted on a signed petition with 43 signatures before he allowed a second contest. “Asking for a petition with 43 signatures in a partyroom of 85 was essentially insisting on a public show of hands on what is meant to be a secret ballot,” Senator Cormann said. “It put enormous pressure on colleagues at the time.” After Mr Turnbull lost the spill motion 45 to 40, that second contest, on August 24, saw Scott Morrison elected PM. Mr Turnbull did not contest the ballot. Senator Cormann voted for Mr Dutton. WA’s Julie Bishop got just 11 votes, with none of her WA colleagues voting for her. “Let me be clear, in the weeks leading up to that week there was no plotting,” Senator Cormann said this week. “There was no organising of numbers. “I worked very, very hard for almost three years under Malcolm’s leadership to help him be the most successful prime minister he could be. “I had a great personal relationship, a great working relationship with Malcolm. I was working very closely with him and his key staff, literally all the way up to that morning (August 21 when Turnbull called the first vote on his leadership). “To walk from a morning leadership meeting into the partyroom and for Malcolm to have made such a significant decision without as much as a conversation with me or other members of the leadership team, with the exception perhaps of Julie Bishop, was extraordinary. “In my view it was a serious error of judgment. I was shocked. I thought it was incredibly reckless. “We are talking about the leadership of the country and the leadership of the government. “What should have happened that week, in my view, is that there should not have been a leadership ballot that Tuesday. “Malcolm should have focused on engaging all of the key members in the partyroom and worked to bring people back together, to unite the team. “The most important job for any leader of the party is to keep the party united and to find a consensus which is in the public interest around issues that risk dividing people.” Senator Cormann believes that had the issue of Mr Turnbull’s leadership not been resolved quickly after that vote, the Coalition would have lost government before the year was out. “If we had left Parliament without resolving the leadership of the Liberal Party with more certainty, it would have led to a debilitating, chaotic and dysfunctional couple of weeks,” he said. “The result would have been that the position of the government itself would have become irretrievable. “The judgment we came to was that ultimately the final outcome was clear and that Malcolm sadly was no longer in a position to reunite the party from where we were to give ourselves the best chance to win the next election. “The question was how long it would take to be resolved and how much harm would be inflicted on the government over that period. Would it be resolved quickly that week or would it take a number of weeks? “I know it looked messy at the time, but not as messy as it could have been. Where we were, we had no great options. Our focus was on how to put ourselves in the least bad position to be competitive at the next election, to be able to retain government so we could continue to deliver the policies we believed Australia needed to ensure a strong and prosperous future and so that we could protect Australians from a Shorten Labor government. “Just letting it run for longer would have been better for my personal reputation over the past nine to 10 months. No doubt. But the end result was going to be the same, except that the government would have found itself in a much worse position from which to rebuild. “We decided to deal with it swiftly to try and put ourselves quickly in as least bad a position from here on end to rebuild into a competitive team that can win the election. “And, of course, subsequently we did.” Of his support for Mr Dutton in the second leadership vote, Senator Cormann said: “I came to the view that Malcolm had lost majority support. I told him that and said that personally I would be supporting Peter in any subsequent ballot. “I explained my position and the reasons why, publicly and privately, at the time and to anyone who asked. “That was my judgment at the time. The Peter I know is perhaps not the Peter that people get to see. “His job is to be the tough cop who protects our borders. But I know him beyond that. I know him as a high-quality human being with great integrity, personal warmth and strength. The fact that he won an outer-suburban mortgage belt seat off Labor, and keeps winning it, shows that the quiet Australians support him. “Having said that, I have a very good relationship with Scott Morrison. I have worked with him very closely and from the moment he was elected leader I have served him loyally and done everything I could to help our Government be successful.” Of not supporting Ms Bishop in the leadership vote, he said: “In the end, members of the partyroom made a judgment on who they felt was best equipped to unite our team in the circumstances we were facing at the time so we were in the best possible position to win the next election, and a majority decided that was Scott and Josh (Frydenberg). “That does not diminish in any way the outstanding contribution Julie has made over a very long period in public office.” Working-class roots The Mathias Cormann life story has been well-documented. It is not quite a rag to riches story — but close. The son of working-class parents, Herbert and Hildegard Cormann, the now 48-year-old studied law in Belgium and England before coming to Perth for a holiday in 1994. Two years later, he emigrated. He had learnt to speak English only three years earlier. “I grew up speaking German and French, I did my law degree in Dutch and learnt a little bit of English along the way. I think I get by OK with my little bit of English,” he laughs. When he arrived in Perth, he realised he would need to do another two years study before being able to practice law in Australia. It was an option he didn’t like. He was a young man in a hurry. His first job in Perth was as a gardener at Presbyterian Ladies College before he won a job with former Liberal senator Chris Ellison — a move that ignited his political career and ambitions. “Gardener is probably overstating my importance at the time,” he laughs. “I was the junior assistant gardener.” He met Hayley, a Perth lawyer, after moving to Perth, got married and has two girls, Isabelle, 6, and Charlotte, 3. Of his long stints in Canberra and the difficulties of juggling a high-level political career and raising a young family, he says: “We (Hayley and I) knew what we were getting ourselves into. “It is a great privilege and great opportunity to contribute to the future direction of our country in this way. “As a family, we are making it work.” Reflecting on his fortunate life in Australia, he said: “How good is Australia? Australia is a country where as an immigrant, if you put your shoulder to the wheel, there is no limit to what you can achieve. “That’s true for many migrants. I am no Robinson Crusoe. I am just an ordinary guy just trying to make a difference and get ahead. I am nothing special.” Whatever Senator Cormann’s take on his life is, the undeniable truth is that his rise in Australian politics remains one of the most impressive political stories of the modern era. He is anything but “ordinary”. Senator Cormann is arguably one of Australia’s most powerful politicians. The term powerbroker follows him because of his undeniable power and influence not only in WA, but in Canberra. Predictably, he dismisses the title. “It (powerbroker) is a media term. It’s not something I subscribe to,” he said. “Nobody is the fountain of all wisdom, but the way you get to the best possible decisions is people with a diversity of views and opinions investing themselves in arguing their case and then accepting the decision that is ultimately made. “I am an active participant in that process. If people want to put a label on it, it’s a matter for them.” But another title also follows him. South Australian senator Rex Patrick, part of the Centre Alliance crossbench, said Senator Cormann was nicknamed the “Senate Whisperer” because of his ability to get Government reforms through the Senate. Senator Patrick was in Perth this week to meet Senator Cormann over “rising energy prices” in Australia. And yes, they have begun to discuss the Government’s tax plan. Senator Patrick said Senator Cormann was a tough negotiator — but fair. “He is a good person to deal with,” he said. “And one of the reasons for that is he plays a very straight bat. We will raise an issue with him, he’ll sit down with us, he’ll listen to what we have to say, he’ll put his perspective forward and there will be consideration until there is some conclusion. “Throughout the entire discussion (there is confidence) that the details won’t be talked about (publicly). “He acts with integrity. We don’t always reach agreement but that doesn’t sour the relationship. “We respectively walk away and Mathias accepts he didn’t get our support, but the next day he will say ‘right, let’s start on the next piece of legislation’. “It’s never personal. “He is the crossbench whisperer.”
