Premier Mark McGowan has thrown his support behind a plugger-wearing teenager who was refused entry to a Scarborough bar for his mullet, urging lovers of the 80s-hairstyle to “rise up and rebel”.

Perth man Cooper Allin has sparked debate over pub dress codes after he was booted out of Scarborough tequila bar El Grotto on the weekend for his hair.

When asked yesterday about his views on the matter, Mr McGowan, the MP for Rockingham, said some of his best mates had mullets.

“I'd just encourage people with mullets to rise up and rebel,” he said.

I'd just encourage people with mullets to rise up and rebel.

- Mark McGowan

“I think you should be free to have a mullet and go to the pub. I don’t think there should be rules around that.”

Despite wearing a Bush Chook T-shirt and thongs, it was Mr Allin’s 80s-inspired mullet which drew the bouncer’s attention at the hipster eatery.

After waiting in a queue for 10 minutes, Mr Allin was told by a bouncer he would need to find somewhere else for his first pub outing in months.

“He said it was the owner’s rule so he wouldn’t let me in,” he told Sunrise.

“I was more concerned about my pluggers but he wasn’t too fussed about that. I reckon it’s a bit silly, I mean it’s a mullet. Heaps of people have mullets.”

“I was a bit shell shocked, I was a bit confused. Considering Scarborough is a pretty welcoming place and all kinds of cultures and people go down there. It was a bit ordinary, I suppose.”

Mr Allin has received widespread support from other mullet wearing enthusiasts since news of the incident broke.

He has already been invited to next year’s annual Mulletfest in the New South Wales coal mining town of Kurri Kurri.
