A Perth comedian has launched a new country music single dedicated to WA’s “heartthrob” Premier Mark McGowan.

Simply titled ‘Mark McGowan’, the three and a half minute song — with an accompanying music video — was written, produced and performed by Chelsea Jones.

In the lyrics, Jones claims to have reached breaking point with “city boys” who are “straight laced and straight faced” and who have come from UWA.

“So I'm gonna head to Rockingham, find myself a country man,” she sings in the opening chorus.

“When I do I'll say ‘do you wanna pick me up go to the pub and then grab a kebab with me Mark McGowan? I'm in love I'd do anything for ya and your hard, hard, hard... border.

“You've got the brains, you've got the rig, we're sipping pints at the Swinging Pig. I think this man's a keeper; he's wearing the suit but still rocking the sneakers.

“I lock the door of my bedroom dim the lights turn on the news and I let it all go.”

Jones said the spark for the song came when she was thinking about how WA had a communal crush on the premier.

“I just thought he would make a really good subject for a country love song about me pining for him,” she said.

“You don’t make a love music video about someone unless you’re crushing real hard.

“I’d love to get a kebab with him. I’m sure he’d be cracking lots of jokes, they say don’t talk politics but I’d be glad to with Mark to be honest.”

Jones said her own obsession with Mr McGowan began when he gave the Easter Bunny an exemption from WA’s hard border.

The song plays on Mr McGowan’s infamous COVID-19 kebab remark — “there’s nothing unlawful about going for a run and having a kebab” — made at a press conference at the height of WA’s coronavirus outbreak.

The video shows Jones carrying a cardboard cut out of Mr McGowan holding a kebab and walking out of ‘Nicko's Place Shish Kebabs’ on Railway Terrace in Rockingham.

Several scenes later in the clip, Jones moved the cut out to her bed before playing arcade games with him on a TimeZone date.

Jones even included a brief make out session with the figurine.

She said the cardboard cut-out cost $60 to make and the people of Rockingham would not stop giving it high-fives as the music video was shot.

Jones hopes to move into more live shows after getting into comedy last year.

The comedian previously acted in several Australian television shows in the 2000s including a 24-episode stint on Neighbours.

Mr McGowan has enjoyed unprecedented satisfaction ratings for his handing of the coronavirus crisis in WA, reaching 86 per cent in June — the highest of all state premiers.

The extraordinary popularity has also lead to a dedicated “Premier Burger” at Scarborough’s The Peach Pit earlier this year, a slap in the face of Opposition leader Liza Harvey who holds the seat.

In June, the Art Gallery of WA announced it had bought a jumper immortalising the infamous kebab phrase to preserve it for future generations.

Textile artist Emma Buswell, 28, had been stood down from her job because of the pandemic and was feeling low when the Premier’s direction on food and jogging rules — “there’s nothing unlawful about going for a run and having a kebab” — lifted her spirits.

Mr McGowan’s local Rockingham pub Swinging Pig even held a dedicated day for the Premier, where they offered free beers for anyone who at the venue when he arrived and free meals for patrons named Mark — as long as someone else at the table ordered a meal too.

In December 2019, Jones uploaded a song titled ‘Hey Scott...’ dedicated to Prime Minister Scott Morrison about “empathy and thinking critically” and “removing political jargon”.

In the song Jones declared she wished New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was running Australia.
