Canberra political staff doing two-hour courses in sexual harassment and respect in the workplace

Staff across all federal political parties are doing two-hour courses in sexual harassment and respect in the workplace, eight months on from ex-Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins alleging she was raped in Parliament House. Ms Higgins came forward in February with the allegation a former colleague raped in the office of her then-boss, WA Senator Linda Reynolds. Her alleged rapist Bruce Lehermann, 26, has indicated he will plead not guilty. The alleged incident sparked a number of reviews into parliamentary culture, including one conducted by deputy secretary of the Prime Minister’s department Stephanie Foster, who recommended mandatory sexual harassment training. The Department of Finance confirmed with The West Australian a training program developed in response to the Foster Review was now rolling out across Parliament. “Roll out of the program is progressing as anticipated with almost 200 training sessions expected to be completed by the end of October,” a spokeswoman said. “The training is mandatory for all Coalition Ministers and their staff.” The spokeswoman said the training was just “one aspect of the ongoing effort to ensure Commonwealth parliamentary workplaces are safe and respectful”. It follows an announcement from the Government earlier this year that only a one-hour voluntary training program would be implemented for Parliamentarians. But women from both parties, including WA Liberal MP Celia Hammond, quickly called for any training to be made mandatory. Another review into parliamentary culture conducted by Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins is due to be handed down next month.
