Three reported dead in Glasgow hotel stabbing

A police officer in the Scottish city of Glasgow has been stabbed while a male suspect has been shot by an armed officer with three feared dead in the heart of the city on Friday.

Police Scotland’s assistant chief constable, Steve Johnson, said he wanted to “reassure the public that this is a contained incident and that the wider public is not at risk.”

He said police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident and that a police officer who was injured is receiving treatment in a hospital.

BBC reporter Catriona Renton tweeted: “Understood three dead in a stairwell of hotel. Had been stabbed. Police shot suspect.”

Horrified witnesses say they saw people being carried from a hotel covered in blood.

One witness tweeted: "S***’s going down in Glasgow City Centre. Someone has been randomly stabbing people on West George Street.

"About half a dozen injured."

Another said: "Around 20 police vehicles, armed officers, sniffer dogs and riot shields are on the scene at West George Street in Glasgow.

"Lots of shouting and huge number of paramedics in hazmat suits".

Some witnesses have reported seeing people being taken away by ambulances.

One told Sky News: "I saw people being treated with blood on the ground.

"I saw people running out of the hotel with the police shouting 'put your hands up, put your hands up, come out'.

"There were police cars, ambulances all over the street and they cordoned it off. Police were shouting to people in other buildings near the Park Inn hotel to stay inside and not come into the street.

"I saw at least three people injured and they were taken away in ambulances."

In a tweet the Scottish Police Federation said it was mindful that family members of police officers were undoubtedly anxious but that the family of the officer injured had been “notified and is being supported by the service”.

Videos and photos on social media show a heavy police presence around the Park Hotel. There are reports of around 20 police vehicles with armed officers and paramedics on the scene.

Images appear to show armed police entering a building and a large number of emergency vehicles outside.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the reports are “truly dreadful“ and that she is being "updated as the situation becomes clearer".

She added: "My thoughts are with everyone involved."

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was “deeply saddened by the terrible incident in Glasgow” and that his thoughts are with “all the victims and their families.”
