Wildlife collisions: WA on track for worst year on record of animals killed by crashes, fresh data reveals

WA is on track for its worst year of wildlife collisions with more than 2600 animals injured or killed in crashes in 2025 alone, fresh data has revealed. RAC has received 2648 animal collision claims since January — more than 51 per cent of the total number of animal collisions (5190) recorded in 2024. WA Wildlife chief executive Dean Huxley said about 600 injured animals — nine per cent of the hospital’s total admissions — were brought into the Bibra Lake clinic each year as a result of vehicle collisions. He said the most struck animals were birds, bandicoots, kangaroos, freshwater turtles and snakes. “If you look at other wildlife facilities in the State, we’re talking thousands of animals a year in Western Australia alone that are getting hit by cars, and they’re just the ones that get brought to us and reported,” he told The West Australian. “There are probably thousands that just die on the road and never get reported.” Among those currently in care are a southwest snake-necked turtle and a western grey kangaroo joey. “This beautiful turtle is lucky to be alive,” Mr Huxley said. “He was recently admitted to the WA Wildlife Hospital after being struck by a car, suffering fractures to both his palate and jaw. “Our veterinary team quickly got to work providing pain relief, taking x-rays to assess the damage and carefully applying a tiny jaw split to help everything heal in place. “He’s now recovering under the watchful eyes of our team, and we’re hopeful for a smooth recovery.” Mr Huxley said the joey was found on the side of the road in its dead mother’s pouch. “It is now undergoing rehabilitation and will not be released for another 14 to 16 months,” he said. Mr Huxley said urban sprawl and major weather events, like bushfires, increased the likelihood of wildlife collisions. “Urban sprawl is the direct reason that we’re seeing a lot more motor vehicle accidents (with animals), particularly in urban areas,” he said. “Anecdotally, we do a lot of bushfire response and when we’ve been out on the ground during bushfires we see animals and kangaroos crossing roads. “We were up in a bushfire a few years ago a bird flew into the back of the truck that was going down the road.” A patch in south-west Sydney, near the Sutherland Shire, has become so notorious for vehicle strikes it has endangered the native chlamydia free koala. Since January, at least 26 koalas have been struck by a motor vehicle in south-west Sydney. Of those, 20 were tragically killed. In 2024, more than 60 koalas were hit — a 56 per cent increase since 2023. Sydney Basin Koala Network manager Stephanie Carrick said the koalas were getting struck while trying to find a mate. “Vehicle strikes is a key threat to koalas because they need to move around the landscape to find new mates and breed,” she told The West. “New roads are built and they dissect their home ranges, so the koalas come down from their trees to travel and have to cross the road and end up getting hit.” She said she feared other native fauna would become endangered as other capital cities continued to expand. “Vehicle strikes are increasing where urban sprawl is happening, and that’s really clear,” she said. “Every time we do see a hot-spot emerge, it’s very obvious that there’s been a planning issue. “It’s really important that when you’re increasing housing, that you’re really sensitive to not fragment habitat for wildlife and include mitigation like underpasses or overpasses.” WIRES Wildlife Rescue spokesperson John Grant said animals often ran across highways in search of food and water. “Animals don’t have a road sense; some of them actually just stand there in the headlights and get hit, some will run towards the noise and others will try and escape,” he said. “It’s very difficult for drivers and motorists, we totally understand that, but the advice that we’re always giving is that ...wildlife are unpredictable and they’re likely to run across the road anytime, particularly when you’re driving and dusk and dawn.” He said human safety was the number one priority and warned motorists should only stop and examine an animal if it was safe to do so. “We advise people never attempt to rescue a raptor, treat all snakes as venomous and also never attempt to rescue a flying fox that needs a vaccination,” he said. “If an animal is in shock, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s deceased ... they can jump up at any time because it’s a wild animals, not a pet.” Mr Grant urged drivers to check kangaroos for any joeys before calling their local wildlife rescue service. “The joey can still be on the teat ... and the impact can knock them out of the pouch, so we always suggest that people check around the area if it turns out to be female,” he said. “The vet will make an assessment on whether it has any broken bones, if it can be rehabilitated, or if it’s too damaged and might need to be humanely euthanised. “The point is, those that can be saved are saved, but those that can’t be saved don’t suffer, which is an important part of animal rescue.” RAC spokesperson Glen Walker urged drivers to stay alert for native wildlife and warned them not to swerve. “Motorists should always be on the lookout for wildlife warning signs and be prepared to act,” he said. “Many drivers instinctively swerve to avoid animals, but this can lead to more serious crashes, so it’s safer to brake firmly and stay in your lane; your reaction should protect you and others on the road. “If you do hit an animal, make sure it’s safe to pull over before checking for injuries or damage and contact your local wildlife rescue services if needed.”
